US Department of Justice COPS Methamphetamine Initiative: The grant addresses prevention, training and the remediation of clandestine labs in the rural and urban areas of Orange County.
Methamphetamine is a highly addictive stimulant that affects the central nervous system. The drug is made easily in clandestine laboratories with relatively inexpensive over-the-counter ingredients. These factors combine to make methamphetamine a drug with high potential for widespread abuse.
Methamphetamine is commonly known as “speed”, “meth,” “chalk.” In its smoked form, it is often referred to as “ice,” “crystal,” “crank,” and “glass.” It is a white odorless, bitter tasting crystalline powder that easily dissolves in water or alcohol.
Loss of appetites and desire to sleep, paranoia, aggressive behavior, or violence, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, muscle twitches and uncontrolled movements are typical, compulsive jaw clenching which causes sore jaw muscles and headaches, bad acne, body sores, elevated breath rate, heart rate and body temperature and convulsions.
Tooth decay, psychotic behavior and violence, hallucinations and delusions, homicidal or suicidal thoughts, strokes, heart infections, kidney and liver damage, increase risk of HIV/AIDS, brain damage and death.
