Orange County Shelter Dog Gains
International Attention in National Broadcast as
“Underdog of the Year” in “World Dog Awards”

Orlando, FL – The original images of the petite, black 2-year old pit-bull mix who came to the attention Orange County Animal Services in August of 2015 were startling, even to veteran rescue personnel. But unbeknownst at the time, the dog who would later be named Khalessi, would quickly go on to grab the hearts of Central Florida and beyond. Today, Orange County Animal Services is pleased to announce that Khalessi continues to progress and was just named “Underdog of the Year,” receiving a “World Dog Award,” which was hosted by the CW Network. She appeared just last night along with other spectacular animals in a national broadcast, hosted by George Lopez.

Khalessi’s story is unique. She came to Orange County Animal Services with a significant impairment – she was missing her nasal cavity and upper jaw. While many might expect the canine to be timid or afraid, those who interacted with her found her to be happy and sweet, despite her medical needs. In addition to her facial disfigurement, she had sustained serious trauma to her hind-end, which impaired her mobility. After just two days at the shelter, Khaleesi was taken in by Passion 4 Pits, which regularly partners with Orange County Animal Services to care for some of the most serious or medically needy animals they encounter. The rescue partner quickly raised the funds needed to help rehabilitate the animal that has since made significant progress.
