Orange County And Winter Garden To Partner On Improving Key District 1 Intersection
ORLANDO—Feb. 28, 2014—Today Orange County Commissioner S. Scott Boyd and Winter Garden City Manager Mike Bollhoefer announce committed funding that will provide $750,000 to advance the design and funding for construction of a roundabout at the intersection of Windermere Road and Roberson Road.
“I am delighted to work together with the City of Winter Garden on this project, which will provide critical traffic flow improvements,” said Orange County Commissioner S. Scott Boyd. “Securing this portion of funding was an important step in reigniting progress on this much-anticipated modification.”
Last night, the Winter Garden City Commission approved the City Manager’s request to hire Alternate Street Design, P.A. to design the roundabout. The City has also budgeted $250,000 for construction.
“Coupled with the $500,000 Orange County has secured for this collaborative transportation project, we are now in an excellent position to begin the design process and move this project forward,” said Winter Garden City Manager Mike Bollhoefer.
Consideration of potential interim improvements to this intersection began when Commissioner Boyd secured funding in 2011 from county savings as a result of recently-passed state legislation. Following multiple community meetings, collaboration with the City of Winter Garden and other public engagement efforts, it became evident that the most desired modification was a roundabout. However, once the roundabout was determined as feasible, identifying funding sources became a significant hurdle as this preferred solution was estimated to be more costly.
“Now that the design is moving forward, Orange County and the City of Winter Garden will continue to work together to identify remaining funding and establish a Memorandum of Understanding to formalize the partnership,” said Boyd.
