Santa Teams with Teachers and Corrections to Deliver Carols and Cheer to Kids at Cherokee School

Who: Santa, the Orange County Corrections Department, Cherokee School and a Team of Elves

What: A longstanding partnership with Cherokee School and the Orange County Corrections Department celebrates the close of each calendar year with carols, gifts and holiday cheer. The relationship with the school and jail, which started more than seven years ago, was bridged through the establishment of a successful program which teamed unlikely pairs – corrections staff and students for a year or longer mentorship. The partnership is a natural fit, as the goal of Cherokee School is to transition students back to their original schools with stronger behavioral, social and educational skills. The results of the program have been remarkable with school officials reporting an increase in reading scores and attendance as well as a decrease in behavioral problems, which often led to the students’ enrollment at Cherokee.

When: Wednesday, December 16, 10:30 a.m. – 11:45 a.m.

Where: Cherokee School, 550 South Eola Drive, Orlando, Florida 32801

Why: Together, the goal of the Correction’s team and school staff is to successfully help these students transition back into their original schools, ultimately steering them away from the potential for involvement with the criminal justice system.
