Biosolids Management

What biosolids are and how they're used

Biosolids Recycling

Biosolids consist of microorganisms that help remove nitrogen and phosphorus from wastewater. When applied on land, nitrogen and phosphorus serve as beneficial plant nutrients. Thus, biosolids are a natural fertilizer that can be beneficially recycled for long-term, sustainable use.

Biosolids must go through a multistep process in order to be recycled by land application. First, thickening and dewatering remove excess water from the biosolids to reduce hauling costs. Then, the biosolids go through a stabilization process to ensure they can be safely used. Once stabilized, the biosolids are ready to be beneficially land applied. Biosolids are rigorously tested to ensure regulatory standards for land application are met.
