What is Children’s Mental Health?

Being mentally healthy during childhood means reaching developmental and emotional milestones, learning healthy social skills, and coping when there are problems. Mentally healthy children have a positive quality of life and can function well at home, in school, and their communities. (Source: cdc: children's mental health)

Why is Children’s Mental Health Important?

Mental health is an essential part of overall health for children and adults. For many adults who have mental disorders, symptoms were present—but often not recognized or addressed—in childhood and adolescence. For a young person with symptoms of a mental disorder, the earlier treatment is started, the more effective it can be. Early treatment can help prevent more severe, lasting problems as a child grows up. (Source: NIMH)

What is Youth Mental Health?

Youth Mental Health, sometimes called Adolescent or Teen Mental Health, describes a young person’s psychological, social, and emotional well-being. Mental health is essential to healthy development, as it helps young people develop positive skills and behaviors.

Why is Youth Mental Health Important?

Mental health is a key part of human health. Parents and teens need not feel ashamed or fearful when seeking treatment. It's no different from getting care for a broken bone, a serious infection, or other primary health concerns. (Source: Teen Mental Health)

Mental health challenges are the leading cause of disability and poor life outcomes in young people. Unfortunately, in recent years, we’ve seen significant increases in particular mental health disorders in youth, including depression, anxiety, and suicidal ideation. Many factors shape the mental health of young people, from individual to societal level forces. (Source: HHS.gov | Why Youth Mental Health Matters)

How Does Poor Mental Health Impact Youth or Adolescent Well-being?

Poor mental health in adolescence is more than feeling blue. It can impact many areas of a teen’s life. Youth with poor mental health may struggle with school and grades, decision-making, and their health. Mental health problems in youth often go hand-in-hand with other health and behavioral risks like increased risk of drug use, experiencing violence, and higher risk sexual behaviors that can lead to HIV, STDs, and unintended pregnancy. The Orange County Government Family Wellbeing Initiative

The OC Family Wellbeing Initiative focuses on addressing behavioral health concerns in young children by identifying and addressing risk factors that may arise during the formative years. The initiative also works with pregnant mothers to ensure healthy pregnancy and lower infant and maternal morbidity rates.

Services also focus on mitigating environmental risks, nurturing healthy growth, and strengthening parent-child bonds, by considering the needs of both children and mothers. Through a collaborative approach with families, caregivers, and early childhood professionals, the initiative fosters a supportive environment that promotes the overall well-being of children and families.
