A portion of this area was acquired by the St. Johns River Water Management District using funds from the Orlando-Orange County Expressway Authority and the Florida Department of Transportation as part of the mitigation for beltway construction in the southern part of the county. Orange County funding provided the partnership to establish this regional preserve that protects the resources of the Econlockhatchee River.
