Water Safety

In efforts to reduce the risk of childhood drowning, Orange County Fire Rescue Department partnered with the Gunner Martin Foundation to provide FREE at home installations of door alarms to Orange County residents.

To schedule your home installation, please fill out a submission form.

As a reminder, door alarms are only one form of barriers. It is recommended to use multiple layers of protection (i.e. fences, gates, doors, safety covers) ABC’s of water safety. Adult Supervision and Classes are just as important when it comes to drowning prevention.

  • Adult Supervision
    • Keep infants and toddlers within an arm’s reach
    • No one should ever swim alone.
    • Assign an adult to be a Water Watcher. Keep your eyes on the water without any distractions.
  • Barriers
    • Use multiple layers of protection:
      • Fences, gates, doors, alarms, safety covers
    • Remove the temptation:
      • Remove toys from pool area and chairs or benches that could be used to get over barriers to the pool.
  • Classes
    • Learn CPR
    • Swim lessons – everyone should know how to swim.

Schedule a
School Program

We have a variety of age-appropriate programs for school-aged children. We can bring a fire engine to your school and give a safety presentation, or you can bring your class to an area fire station. Some topics we cover, based on the age of the students, are as follows:

  • Exit drills in the home
  • Crawling low under smoke
  • Demonstrating firefighter's gear
  • Calling 9-1-1
  • Don't play with matches!
  • Careers in the Fire Service

To schedule your group, call the Community Risk Reduction Services (CRRS) at (407) 836-8337 or complete the online Community Events Request Form. We ask for at least two weeks advance notice.

Attend Children's
Safety Village

Children practice safety while having fun at the Orange County Children’s Safety Village. A special fire safety house helps children of all ages learn fire dangers and how to avoid injury. Visit the official Central Florida Children’s Safety Village site for more information.

Learn Proper
Car Seat Use

Learning the right way to use a car seat can help save your child's life in the case of a car accident. Monthly child safety seat checkpoints help parents learn the correct way to install a child car seat and check for defects and recalls.

Child Safety Seat
Checkpoints

Get your car seat inspected each month by a Certified Child Passenger Safety Technician at one of the following Orange County Fire Station locations.

Learn Proper
Syringe Disposal

There’s a right way and a wrong way to get rid of your syringes. Don’t throw them in the trash. Take them to your nearest County Fire Station instead. Your fire station has a special container for used needles, which can be returned between 8 a.m. and 8 p.m. seven days a week. This service is entirely free. Used needles and syringes can transmit hepatitis, HIV, AIDS and other fatal disease, so be safe.
