The Pine Hills Trail represents approximately 8 miles of Orange County’s Trails Master Plan. The trail almost exclusively uses existing utility corridors and will be the primary trail connection between the Shingle Creek Trail and the Seminole-Wekiva Trail.
In April of 2011, President Obama launched America’s Great Outdoors initiative that saw the Department of the Interior selecting the Shingle Creek Trail to receive national recognition in a document titled “ America’s Great Outdoors Fifty State Report”. Additionally, the northern segment of the Pine Hills Trail (Segment 3) was identified by the State of Florida Office of Greenway and Trails as a critical gap in Florida’s Coast to Coast Trail. Therefore, the Pine Hills Trail’s regional importance is bookended by the connection of these state and national trail priorities.
On February 11, 2014 the Orange County Board of County Commissioners approved an agreement with the State of Florida to fully fund the trail design with Federal dollars. Federal funds for trail construction are also scheduled.
The Pine Hills Trail is being developed in three phases, the first phase will begin at Alhambra Drive and extend north to Silver Star Road, the second phase will begin at Silver Star Road and extend north to the Clarcona-Ocoee Road, Phase three will begin at Clarcona-Ocoee Road and extend north to the Seminole-Wekiva Trail at the Orange-Seminole County line.
The first phase of the project includes a spur trail that connects with Barnett Park. The remaining portion of the Pine Hills Trail which extends from Alhambra Drive south to State Road 50 make the connection to the Shingle Creek Trail could be included in the phase 2 or phase 3 project.
For Phase I, the multi-use trail will be designed as a 10-ft wide, asphalt trail, with one-foot concrete ribbon curbs in the Duke Power Easement, and a 12-ft wide concrete trail within roadway right of way. It also includes two pedestrian crossings, one at Pine Hills Road and the other at Silver Star Road, and crossing the south end of the existing pond.
