Osceola County Line to Sand Lake Road

Location

The Orange County portion of the Shingle Creek Trail will be approximately 9.3 miles, including the first mile that was constructed along Shingle Creek from Sand Lake Road to Destination Parkway.

Description

In April 2011 President Obama launched America’s Great Outdoors initiative that saw the Department of the Interior select the Shingle Creek Trail to receive national recognition in a document titled “America’s Great Outdoors Fifty State Report.” This multi-use recreational trail is being developed through cooperation of local governments including Orange County, Osceola County, City of Orlando and City of Kissimmee.

Orange County’s portion of the trail includes the following:

  • Phase 1: West Sand Lake Road to Taft-Vineland Road
    • Segment 1: completed – West Sand Lake Road to Destination Parkway (opened 2019)
    • Segment 2: Destination Parkway to S.R. 528 and Segment 3: S.R. 528 to Taft-Vineland Road are both nearing final design. Construction is anticipated to begin in late 2024. These two segments will connect the existing Phase 1, Segment 1 at Destination Parkway south to the newly completed Phase 2 at Taft-Vineland Road.
  • Phase 2: completed – Taft-Vineland Road to Town Loop Boulevard
  • Phase 3: Town Loop Boulevard to the Osceola County line is under construction. Construction is expected to be completed by the end of 2024.
  • Phase 4: will connect the existing Pine Hills Trail just north of Alhambra Drive to the City of Orlando’s existing Shingle Creek Trail network to the south. A feasibility study is underway.

Purpose

When fully constructed, Shingle Creek Trail will stretch 32 miles through one of Florida’s heavily urbanized metropolitan areas. This trail will become part of an extensive trail network that extends from Kissimmee to Wekiwa Springs State Park and from Orlando to Mascotte. In its entirety, it will serve as a key north-south connector in a larger regional trails network that includes the West Orange Trail, South Lake Trail, Cross Seminole Trail, and Seminole Wekiva Trail.

Completing the Shingle Creek Trail will significantly increase outdoor opportunities for bikers and pedestrians in urban central Florida.

    • The completion of the incomplete phases is subject to availability of construction funding from the federal government.
