Pedestrian/Bicycle Safety

Orange County is committed to providing long-term benefits to our citizens. The INVEST in Our Home for Life program provides Infrastructure, New public safety facilities, Vibrant neighborhoods and affordable family housing, Enhanced recreation opportunities, Safety improvements for pedestrians, and Transportation connectivity throughout Orange County.

From January 2006 to February 2015, unincorporated Orange County had 4,968 pedestrian/bicycle crashes that included 4,083 injuries and 256 fatalities. Download the tip sheet below on how to safely share the road with a motor vehicle.

Florida law is specific when it comes to persons propelling a vehicle by human power. For your safety when sharing the road with motorized vehicles it is important to know the law. Download a copy of the Florida bicycle regulations here:

Through the INVEST program, Orange County Public Works will address pedestrian and bicycle safety in a coordinated, comprehensive, and consistent manner at selected intersections and provide corridor improvements that may include:

• Pedestrian crosswalks at uncontrolled locations and new mid-block crossings.
• Rapid flashing beacons and Speed Feedback Signs.
• Crosswalk Upgrades to special emphasis standards.
• Intersection improvements to reduce pedestrian crossing time.
• Pedestrian lighting at intersections and crosswalks with high pedestrian volume.
• Audible Pedestrian Signals.
• Small sidewalk connections.
• Traffic signal upgrades to include pedestrian signals on all approaches, overhead Turning Vehicles Yield to Pedestrian signs, and back plates with reflective borders.

Engineering:

• Guide road improvement projects toward a Complete Streets approach in design and implementation to take advantage of opportunities to create complete walking and biking networks.
• Identify and address barriers to make streets safe and convenient for all users, including people of all ages and abilities and those using assistive mobility devices.
• Gather and track walking and biking data with Pedestrian/Bicycle Counts.

Education and Enforcement:

• Improve walking and biking safety laws and regulations, local code and related policies.
• Educate and enforce proper road use and behavior by all.
