Office of Sustainability & Resilience
This Earth Month, the Office of Sustainability & Resilience is highlighting energy efficiency and renewable energy. Here are some of the key initiatives we’ve undertaken this year to promote sustainability across Orange County:
Advancing Clean Mobility
- We are finalizing a strategic plan to transition the County’s light-duty fleet to electric and
alternative fuel vehicles.
- In partnership with OUC, we installed a new high-speed EV charging hub at the Orange County Convention Center, open to the public.
Empowering Residents with Clean Energy Resources
- Supporting Solar Co-ops: Orange County supports an annual solar co-op in partnership with
Solar United Neighbors, helping residents learn about solar energy and determine if their homes are good candidates.
Improving Countywide Operations
- Completing vulnerability assessments on critical assets to increase their resilience to future flooding scenarios.
- Reviewing countywide energy usage to meet the ambitious goals outlined in the
Sustainable Operations and Resilience Action Plan (SORAP)
- Conducting ASHRAE Level II Energy Audits for some of the County’s most energy-intensive buildings to identify ways to make the buildings run more efficiently.
Beyond Energy & Emissions: 2024 Accomplishments
The Office of Sustainability & Resilience collaborates with other County divisions on a broad range of sustainability initiatives. Some notable achievements this year include:
- Secured a $1 million Grant: Successfully secured with regional partners a $1 million grant to develop a Climate Action Plan for Central Florida.
- Building Green Expertise: 13 staff members earned LEED Green Associate accreditations, demonstrating expertise in sustainable building practices.
- Going Digital: Transitioned to a digital Board of County Commissioners agenda, saving 293 cases of paper annually.
Goals for the Year
- Complete a 5-year Progress Update for our SORAP in collaboration with the
Sustainability Advisory Board and internal teams.
- Explore how County facilities can serve as resilience hubs for disaster relief, with a focus on
at-risk communities.
